insures specific items individually at their appraised replacement value. Each piece is listed on the policy with its own coverage limit. The main advantage is precision: you know exactly what each item is insured for, and in many cases scheduled items are covered with no deductible, meaning you receive the full insured value in the event of a claim. Basically - you can have each of your items insured at their appraised price.
provides a higher overall limit for a category of items without requiring individual listings or appraisals for each piece. It's a simpler approach that works well for collections where individual items are of moderate value, but per-item limits can vary significantly between insurers, so it's worth understanding what those limits are before assuming your most valuable pieces are fully protected. In this instance, you just insure your whole collection of items at a set level.

This establishes the replacement value of the piece at the time the policy is written and serves as the basis for any future claim.
A few things worth knowing:
Appraisals should be updated regularly. The value of gold, precious metals, and gemstones changes over time, and an appraisal from ten years ago may significantly underrepresent what a piece is worth today. Most insurers and brokers recommend updating appraisals every three to four years.
Keep the documentation. Your appraisal report, along with receipts, photographs, and any certificates that came with the piece, is essential for making a successful claim. Store copies in a safe, separate location from the items themselves.
Where to find an appraiser. The Canadian Jewellers Association maintains a directory of Canadian Accredited Jewellery Appraisers (CAJA) across the country if you're not sure where to start.
One of the advantages of scheduling individual items on a dedicated policy rather than relying on the sub-limits of a home insurance policy is that scheduled items are often insured with no deductible.
That means in the event of a loss, you receive the full insured value of the item rather than the insured value minus whatever your standard deductible is.
For high-value pieces, this distinction matters considerably. It's one of the more compelling reasons to move valuable items off a standard home policy and onto a dedicated schedule.

Jewellery and collectibles insurance covers a much wider range of items than most people expect. Beyond rings and necklaces, specialized coverage is available for:
If you're unsure whether a specific item qualifies, an InsureLine broker can help you figure out the right coverage structure for what you own.
